Description

A true gastronomic journey influenced by Portuguese writers who found in our village their creative refuge and gave rise to the Literary Route of Cascais designed by António Ribeiro, a master's student at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon and the School of Hotel and Tourism Management of Estoril as part of an internship facilitated by the Municipality of Cascais.

This year, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Branquinho da Fonseca's death, he will be the featured author, whose life and work will be commented on by Professor Maria Mota Almeida, from ESHTE.

This moment will be an articulation between different areas of knowledge such as literature, tourism, and gastronomy, providing guests with the experience of heritage, cultural identity, and the authenticity of the Cascais community.

Similar to the first event, the dishes served will interpret the writers and their literary works, revealing themselves in a creative and communicative practice, enhancing different receptions and perceptions of their literary productions.

But before sitting down at the table, you can discover part of this route in the company of Cascais Jovem (Locals Program) and some of its illustrious protagonists. The village of Cascais invariably exudes a sense of enjoyable leisure and therefore emerges as a privileged setting for stories, characters, and writers.

Even before the late 19th-century railway advent, Almeida Garrett was already stealthily escaping to Cascais in search of his forbidden love, Viscountess da Luz.

With the progressive blurring of distances between the village and the capital, more and more authors wrote about Cascais.

Ramalho Ortigão praised the beaches and the therapeutic properties of its waters, while Alberto Pimentel delighted in the local gastronomy. For Fernando Pessoa and Maria Amália Vaz de Carvalho, Cascais was a comforting spiritual refuge. Eça de Queiroz gathered the main intellectuals of his time in lively dinners at Casa de S. Bernardo. And although the village naturally had a relaxed aspect, it could not escape the main issues of its time, as Ruben A. reminds us after living with several refugees from World War II at Chalet Leitão, near the Bay.

It is also necessary to highlight the role of Branquinho da Fonseca, responsible for bringing libraries closer to the community through his recognized work as curator of the Museum-Library Condes de Castro Guimarães.

From these multiple references linking books to the village, the Literary Route of Cascais was born, which aims to promote local literary heritage.
