The building, organized around several courtyards, is developed on a ground floor set on four different levels, which adapt to the topography of the terrain.
The exterior space of the Library evokes the ancient landscape and economic activities of the region.

In terms of the architectural design, by architect Joรฃo Lucas Dias, a modern and bright building was conceived, facing inwards, but seeking to respect the volume of the existing urban fabric with which it interacts. The building, organized around several courtyards, is spread over a ground floor on four different levels, which adapt to the topography of the terrain.
The outdoor area of the library evokes the region's ancient landscape and economic activities.
In the first courtyard, called the cereal cycle, cereal farming is commemorated. In another area, called the labyrinth, a spiral bench made of solid stone and wood is an allegory of European mythology and the evolution of human knowledge. A third courtyard, where an olive tree has been planted, represents the Olive Oil Cycle, which together with wine and cereals constitutes the trilogy of products of Mediterranean Portugal.
This space also features an amphitheater and a garden divided into two distinct areas: the orchard, symbolizing wealth and agricultural art; and the forest, reflecting the biological diversity of the country's flora.
