The Pillars of History – Story Time for Adults
“The Pillars of History”, with Eduardo Gomes, is a project focused on the History of Portugal, consisting of a series of sessions supported by captivating communication, analyzing the great deeds, the glories and misfortunes, the mythical heroes, the betrayal of the weak, the virtues and sins of Portugal.

The plan for the remaining four stories through the end of the year includes the following topics to be covered between september and december:
• The reign of Cardinal-King D. Henrique:
The candidates for the royal succession;
The conflict-ridden relationship between Henrique and the Prior of Crato;
The agreement with Philip II of Spain;
The Cortes of Almeirim—January 1580;
The king’s death.
• The interregnum—January 1580 / April 1581:
Governors and judges during the succession crisis;
Foreign support for the Portuguese cause;
The negotiations of Prince António and Catherine of Braganza with their cousin Philip;
The acclamation of the Prior of Crato in Santarém;
The Governors’ flight to Aiamonte;
The collaboration of the aristocracy and the bourgeoisie in the loss of independence;
The invasion by the Duke of Alba: the battles of Cascais and Alcântara;
The Cortes of Tomar.
• The dual monarchy:
The chapters of the Cortes and the new statute of the Kingdom of Portugal;
Resistance in the Azores;
The Philip family’s failure to honor the commitments of Tomar;
The consequences of the closure of Portuguese ports;
Portugal as an enemy of England and the Netherlands;
The Spanish Armada and Drake’s privateering expeditions;
Ormuz, the beginning of the end of the Portuguese Empire;
The 1630s and the revolutionary atmosphere in Portugal.
