RHINOCEROS, by TEC - Cascais Experimental Theater
Written in 1959 by Eugรจne Ionesco, โRhinocerosโ is one of the seminal works of the theater of the absurd and one of the most celebrated political parables of the 20th century.
In a small town, the inhabitants inexplicably begin to turn into rhinoceroses. As the phenomenon spreads, what at first provokes astonishment, fear, and revulsion gradually becomes commonplace, desirable, and, ultimately, almost impossible to avoid. Ionesco thus constructs a play about the contagion of ideas, conformity, the seduction of collective power, and the difficulty of maintaining an โIโ when everyone chooses to belong to a โWe.โ
