Description

At 8:30 in the morning of "the initial, entire and clean day," as described by Sophia, Jorge Castro was in the vicinity of Praça do Comércio in Lisbon, witnessing the movement of troops. He responded to the call from someone who had called him very early in the morning, urgently summoning people to downtown Lisbon, as something very important, politically speaking, was happening.

Armed with his Voigtländer Vito CD, he photographed the military activity and the people flooding the streets of Lisbon, where the smile and joy of living, long suppressed, were reinvented. The testimony of that gaze and the memories of that day, now fifty years distant from us, will be on display in this exhibition, which brings together a selection of 75 black and white photographs taken from April 25, 1974, to May 1 of the same year.

Jorge Castro was born in Porto in 1952 but lives in Carcavelos because he misses the sea. His passion for the art of putting words together led him to publish seventeen works, mostly poetry. Photography has also played a prominent role in his life as an amateur since his youth, which is why he had the opportunity to experience April in a state of grace and to the fullest. In 2009, he received the Cultural Merit Medal from the Cascais Municipal Council.
