Description

The lecture “Microplastics in the Ocean” will discuss the origins of plastic and microplastic pollution, its characteristics and dispersion in the environment, as well as some of the economic and ecological impacts.

The session will also present the results of work carried out in Portugal, as well as initiatives aimed at reducing this serious global problem, which is complex and cuts across various sectors of society and which, despite being identified, lacks effective solutions.

Plastics adsorb persistent organic compounds, which are present in water and release toxic additives incorporated into their production.

These pollutants are bioaccumulative and can potentially be transferred along the trophic chain, reaching human populations through the consumption of seafood, a risk that needs to be assessed.

We now know that there are microplastics circulating in our bodies, an added concern for human health.
