Portugal's fossil cephalopods
Description
Cephalopods appeared in the Palaeozoic Era and, from that time onwards, spread all over the planet. Consequently, the Portuguese fossil record contains a wide variety of remains of these animals, especially the belemnites and ammonites from the Mesozoic. This group is so important that a stratotype has been defined on the Peniche peninsula and serves as a reference for the whole world.
