Description

Brazilian artist Bettina Vaz Guimarães lives and works between São Paulo and Lisbon. Her artistic production includes painting, drawing, installations and site-specific works.

In the set of paintings she is showing in Cascais, the artist is continuing her pictorial research, in which colour and form are the primary elements. In the 280 paintings that make up the exhibition, specially designed for the space of the former Founder's Chapel of the Convent of Our Lady of Mercy of the Discalced Carmelites, the artist explores a new colour palette inspired by the streets of Lisbon. It was the shapes, the architecture, the landscape, the colours and luminosity, the scenes of everyday life in this city that would define where her painting would take her.

All 280 works (24x32cm each) were done in acrylic paint on paper, graphite and coloured pencil and are part of the " Elementos (2018 - 2024)" series. Arranged side by side in the Chapel of the Cascais Cultural Centre, the paintings provide an intense sample of the artist's chromatic universe. Presented in this way, they also reveal the interrelationship between the works. The artist worked on several paintings simultaneously, allowing one image to influence another, reflecting the complexity of today's world.

"In this exhibition I want the visitor to dive into my universe with infinite solutions, there are many paintings and you can feel confused and submerged. Enter my universe and let yourself be involved. Breathe calmly, look carefully, choose 3 works that you like, leave the room, return and choose 2 more. This exhibition is for looking, looking at the details. You'll notice more and more details," says the artist in a note to visitors.

The exhibition is part of an initiative by the D. Luís I Foundation and Cascais Town Hall, as part of the Museum Quarter programme.
