Description

Also as part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of 25 April, the Municipal Historical Archive of Cascais, in partnership with the Laboratory of History, Territories and Communities of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, is organising a conference, given by Marianela Valverde, on freedom and repression during the Estado Novo.

It will discuss the historiographical construction of repression, which is not only centred on the resistance actions of political prisoners, clandestines, exiles and deportees, the consequence of a regime of persecution, violence and torture, but also on the process of opposition to the fascist regime carried out by their families. History can now be built with the revelation of testimonies that make it possible to uncover unknown historical events, constituting valuable elements for the building of social memory.

Marianela Valverde has a degree in Communication and Journalism from Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologias and a Master's in Contemporary History from FCSH-Universidade Nova de Lisboa (UNL). She is a PhD student in Contemporary History at FCSH-UNL and her research centres on the resistance processes of the relatives of those who opposed the Estado Novo dictatorship. Her areas of research and interest include the history of resistance to fascist regimes and the historical processes surrounding the Expostos.
