Description

This year, as Portugal celebrates the 50th anniversary of the conquest of freedom, bestowed by the Revolution of April 25th, this exhibition systematizes the key moments that marked half a century of history in our community, inspired by the ideals that could finally flourish in 1974.

Cascais has always been a place of refuge or exile for men and women from diverse backgrounds who dared to think and/or live differently. Thus, in the mid-20th century, when leftist activists were persecuted by the political police of the Estado Novo regime, the municipality witnessed the organization of a network of clandestine houses of the Portuguese Communist Party, where its most important militants found shelter, held decisive meetings, and made bold plans.

From 1973, Cascais reinforced its role in the history of the struggle for freedom, hosting some of the most important meetings that prepared the regime change, including the notable meeting of the Armed Forces Movement on March 5, 1974, where the base text of its program was approved. The April 25th Revolution, also known as the Carnation Revolution, led by this Movement, would overthrow the Estado Novo, ensuring the establishment of a democratic regime in Portugal, based on a new Constitution.

This exhibition addresses the most symbolic moments of this shared history. Come and discover or recall some of the main achievements for the municipality, from 1974 to the present day.

Inauguration: June 11th, Tuesday, at 6:00 PM

The exhibition runs from 11 June to 06 July 2024, except on 25, 26 and 27 June.
