Description

In this new exhibition at Casa Sommer, 8 series with 45 photographs by Alexandre Barão, dated 2021 and 2022, are displayed. These photographs structure a fictional story around World War II, Portugal's neutrality, and the fear of an aerial attack by the German aviation. The author invites us on a journey into the unknown, discovering enigmas that reflect historical details, aesthetic influences, and timeless states of mind. The photographic approach is intimate and inspired by the 'film noir' aesthetic, emphasizing the ephemeral human condition.

The exhibition also features pieces from the RTP Museum – Rádio e Televisão de Portugal and the Cascais Municipal Historical Archive, including foreign guest registration forms from hotels in the Cascais area during World War II.

Alexandre Barão was born in 1969 in Angola. He currently lives in Lisbon. He is a photographer and researcher in Computer Engineering (Ph.D. from Instituto Superior Técnico). Influenced by Magnum photographers, his work is characterized by environments where the human element takes center stage. He is a guest professor at IADE, Faculty of Design Technology and Communication (European University). He was the Director of the Professional Photography Course at Liceu Camões (2018/2020). He has attended (among others): the Photographic Project Course at the Portuguese Association of Photographic Art (APAF); the Visual Culture Course at Atelier de Lisboa; and, the Analog Photography Course at the Photographic Art Center (NAF), Instituto Superior Técnico. He conducts photography workshops and is available to participate in related events.
