Unfinished Images, by Joana Leitão Salvador
The Cascais Cultural Center presents the painting and sculpture exhibition “Unfinished Images,” dedicated to the work of Portuguese artist Joana Leitão Salvador.
The exhibition is organized by the D. Luís I Foundation in collaboration with the Cascais City Council, as part of the Museum District program.
It is curated by Manuel Costa Cabral. Born in Lisbon in 1971, Joana Leitão Salvador lived in Sweden until the age of 18, where her family had gone into exile for political reasons. Every year, in the summer, she would return to Portugal to be with her grandmother, the painter Menez (1926–1995), who taught her the basics of painting and drawing. This connection runs through the artist's work.
The exhibition brings together around 100 works produced between 2003 and 2025, organized into thematic groups that highlight the diversity and consistency of the artist's visual research.
Among the works, where the female element plays a central role, are gouache paintings, encaustics, and monotypes, as well as ceramic sculptures (faience and stoneware), including figures evocative of fertility goddesses, open mouths, busts, and pots.
