Vieira da Silva: Engravings for René Char's "L'Inclémence lointaine"
This exhibition brings together 25 engravings by Maria Helena Vieira da Silva, the Lisbon-born painter who became one of the leading figures of 20th-century abstract art. She created the series to illustrate "L'Inclémence lointaine", an anthology of 52 poems by the French poet René Char. Regarded as a significant part of her printmaking work, the series reveals the close artistic bond between painter and poet.
The exhibition also highlights the role of composer Fernando Lopes-Graça in promoting Vieira da Silva's work in Portugal. In 1966, he organised an exhibition devoted to the painter at the Academia de Amadores de Música in Lisbon.
Alongside Lopes-Graça's own copy of "L'Inclémence lointaine", visitors can see other items from the composer's archive, including catalogues personally dedicated to him by the artist. Together, they offer a glimpse into the rich and varied collections of the Documentation Centre at the Museu da Música Portuguesa (Portuguese Music Museum).
