In the 16th century, a small people dreamed of the East, set sail on the dark sea and, beyond the horizon, discovered all of humanity. Camões, Prince of Poets, “prepared his soul for death” (as is fitting for sailors) and sang brilliantly of the birth of this nation in Os Lusíadas. The Prince of Poets, whose birth we honor, lived in a permanent state of passion, expressed in a remarkable lyrical work. The dignity he conferred on women is impressive. He died in poverty.
