Embroidered Portraits - Collective Exhibition by the grandmothers of the initiative A Avó Veio Trabalhar (Grandma Came to Work) – São Domingos de Rana
This exhibition marks International Older Persons Day (October 1) and World Senior Citizen's Day (October 28) by celebrating the power of creativity in valuing each stage of life, with a special focus on aging. The exhibition is the result of work carried out by the grandmothers of the initiative A Avó Veio Trabalhar – São Domingos de Rana (Grandma Came to Work – São Domingos de Rana), who dedicate themselves to embroidery as a form of personal and collective expression.
More than a traditional technique, embroidery here becomes a means of communication and sharing, crossing generations and rescuing memories. Each embroidered stitch carries a story, a gaze, an experience. The portraits presented are not just visual representations: they are manifestations of identity, self-esteem, and self-image. They are voices embroidered with delicacy, but also with firmness. By sharing their stories through embroidery, the Grandmothers affirm their presence in the world.
The exhibition is a testament to the fact that aging can be lived with expression, autonomy, and meaning. Each portrait reveals the value of recognizing the experience accumulated over time and reinforces the importance of creating spaces where older people can continue to contribute, inspire, and create.
