Description

This event is part of the “Encontros de Sabedoria” series, a project conceived and organized by Maria da Conceição Valdez Telles de Menezes. The eighth meeting will focus on the theme “Spirituality of the Here and Now,” featuring Rui Grácio das Neves (Dominican friar and practitioner of holistic spirituality) and Paulo Borges (professor of philosophy and meditation, writer).
This session will take a theoretical and practical approach to the realization that what is essential is always present, at every moment and in every situation of our lives, leading to the discovery of peace, joy, and happiness in simply being, freeing us from the illusion that we are always lacking something we must find outside ourselves or in the future. This is the most radically transformative discovery there is, offering an alternative to the dominant culture of work, distraction, production, and consumption.
At the end of the talk, there will also be a guided meditation led by Paulo Borges.
Rui Garcia das Neves, a Portuguese national (Lisbon, 1955), is a Dominican priest and was ordained a “Bodhisattva” by the Zen Dojo of the Lisbon “Sangha.” He holds doctorates in Theology, Philosophy, and Sociology and is a scholar of religions and macro-ecumenism. He has published eleven books, as well as numerous articles on Theology and the Social Sciences, published in various journals. He is currently working on Holistic Spirituality, from both a theoretical and, above all, a practical perspective. He has resided at the Dominican Convent of São Domingos in Lisbon since 2009.
Paulo Borges is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon, where he teaches Philosophy in Portugal, Asian Philosophies, Philosophy of Religion, Philosophy and Meditation, and World Philosophies. He is a researcher at the Center for Philosophy at the same university, where he coordinates the ongoing seminar “Vita Contemplativa. Contemplative Practices and Contemporary Culture.” He is the author and editor of 70 books published in various countries.
