A tribute to Branquinho da Fonseca
The Cascais Municipal Library โ Casa da Horta da Quinta de Santa Clara pays tribute to Antรณnio Josรฉ Branquinho da Fonseca (1905โ1974), the visionary who transformed the library of the Condes de Castro Guimarรฃes Museum into a true public library and who created Portugalโs first mobile library, paving the way for new access to reading in Cascais and across the country.
As part of this commemoration of the 121st anniversary of Branquinho da Fonsecaโs birth, we will bring back into active use one of the tables and four chairs he designed for the Condes de Castro Guimarรฃes Museum-Library in one of the reading rooms of the Cascais Municipal Library, where we will permanently honour the inventor of the Cascais Mobile Library.
The event will also feature the opening of a temporary documentary exhibition on the life and work of this great Portuguese figure, and a lecture to be given by Maria Mota Almeida and Luรญs Branquinho. Poems by acclaimed authors will be read in the various reading rooms of the Library, including works by Antรณnio Madeira, the pseudonym of Branquinho da Fonseca.
Come and (re)discover the life and work of this โintellectual in actionโ!
