Wisdom Gatherings: A Series of Inspiring Talks - “Spirituality of the Here and Now”
This event is part of the "Encounters of Wisdom" cycle, a project conceived and led by Maria da Conceição Valdez Telles de Menezes.
The eighth meeting will focus on "Spirituality of the Here-and-Now," with Rui Grácio das Neves (Dominican Friar and practitioner of Holistic Spirituality) and Paulo Borges (Professor of Philosophy and Meditation and writer). A theoretical and practical approach will be taken to the understanding that the essential can be present in any moment and situation of life, leading to the discovery of peace, joy, and happiness in simply being, freeing us from the illusion that we always lack something that we must find outside ourselves or in the future. This is a radically transformative discovery, constituting an alternative to the dominant culture of work, distraction, production, and consumption. At the end of the lecture, there will be a guided meditation led by Paulo Borges.
Rui Garcia das Neves (Lisbon, 1955) is a Dominican priest and was ordained a "Bodhisattva" by the Zen Dojo of the Lisbon "Sangha". He holds doctorates in Theology, Philosophy, and Sociology, and is a scholar of Religions and Macroecumenism. He has published eleven books, as well as numerous articles on Theology and Social Sciences in various journals. He currently works on Holistic Spirituality, from a theoretical and, above all, practical point of view. Since 2009, he has resided at the Dominican Convent of São Domingos in Lisbon.
Paulo Borges is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon, where he teaches Philosophy in Portugal, Philosophies of Asia, Philosophy of Religion, Philosophy and Meditation, and Philosophies of the World. He is a researcher at the Philosophy Center of the same University, where he coordinates the Permanent Seminar “Vita Contemplativa. Contemplative Practices and Contemporary Culture”. He is the author and organizer of 70 books published in several countries.
