Encounters with Wisdom: a cycle of inspiring sharing
This event, the third in the โEncounters of Wisdomโ series, a project conceived and promoted by Maria da Conceiรงรฃo Valdez Telles de Menezes, features Mรกrio Simรตes and, as commentator, Armando Soares, Councilman of the Municipality of Oeiras.ย The theme of today's lecture is โExpanded States of Consciousness: A Path to Personal Development and Spirituality.โ
A brief introduction to the definition of Consciousness is given. Its physiological and modified states are discussed. Some ways of inducing modified and expanded states of consciousness are described: a brief description of clinical hypnosis, rhythmic sound and dance, meditation, and psychedelics. Reference is made to expanded states of consciousness susceptible to personal development and spirituality: near-death experiences, positive futures, regression to supposed past lives, and โcontactsโ with the deceased.
Mรกrio Simรตes is a Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist, Retired Professor of Psychiatry and Consciousness Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon. He is co-author of the book โPsychology of Consciousness - a transpersonal perspectiveโ and the book โManual of Clinical Hypnosis - theory, research, and practice.โ
