How a "Chata" Is Built: A Live Micro Shipyard Experience
As part of the celebrations for Municipality Week and World Oceans Day, this event evokes the town’s historic connection to fishing and the sea, while contributing to the preservation and promotion of local memory and identity. At the micro shipyard set up along Passeio D. Luís I, next to Praia da Ribeira, visitors will have the opportunity to watch the live construction of a traditional Cascais “Chata”, following the original boatbuilding techniques used for these fishing vessels.
The event also offers the chance to meet “Tó” Simão, fisherman and the town’s last master boatbuilder, as well as the iconic “Maria da Luz” Chata, winner of the last edition of the Chata Races, held in Cascais in 1982.
