How a "Chata" Is Built: A Live Micro Shipyard Experience
As part of the Celebrar Cascais celebrations, World Oceans Day, and the event “Cascais: A Meeting Place for Centenary Vessels”, this activity highlights the town’s historical connection to fishing and the sea and helps to preserve and promote local heritage and identity. At the micro shipyard set up along Passeio D. Luís I, next to Praia da Ribeira, visitors will have the opportunity to watch the live construction of a traditional Cascais “Chata”, following the original boatbuilding techniques used for these fishing vessels.
The event also offers the chance to meet “Tó” Simão, fisherman and the town’s last master boatbuilder, as well as the iconic “Maria da Luz” Chata, winner of the last edition of the Chata Races, held in Cascais in 1982.
