How a "Chata" Is Built: A Live Micro Shipyard Experience
As part of the Celebrar Cascais celebrations, World Oceans Day, and the event โCascais: A Meeting Place for Centenary Vesselsโ, this activity highlights the townโs historical connection to fishing and the sea and helps to preserve and promote local heritage and identity. At the micro shipyard set up along Passeio D. Luรญs I, next to Praia da Ribeira, visitors will have the opportunity to watch the live construction of a traditional Cascais โChataโ, following the original boatbuilding techniques used for these fishing vessels.
The event also offers the chance to meet โTรณโ Simรฃo, fisherman and the townโs last master boatbuilder, as well as the iconic โMaria da Luzโ Chata, winner of the last edition of the Chata Races, held in Cascais in 1982.
