Description

A theoretical course introducing participants to printmaking techniques through the work of Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos and his contribution to the development of this artistic practice. Across six sessions, participants will explore different printmaking processes and approaches, gaining insight into both their technical and creative foundations. Led by Joรฃo Cochofel, the course is intended for young people and adults aged 18 and over.

Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos (1931โ€“2008) was a Portuguese painter and printmaker widely recognised as one of the masters of modern printmaking. He spent much of his life in London, where he taught at the Slade School of Fine Art, playing a decisive role in bringing Portuguese printmaking to an international audience.

His work, centred on engraving and etching, is distinguished by its technical precision and strong symbolic dimension. He frequently explored themes of historical memory, political repression and Portuguese identity, reflecting the context of the Salazar regime and the nostalgia of exile. Series such as Bishops and Ode Marรญtima reveal his exploration of the human condition, labyrinths and skeletal figures, influenced by writers such as Fernando Pessoaโ€™s Ode Marรญtima and filmmakers such as Andrei Tarkovsky.

6 sessions of 2h30 each | 7 to 15 participants
