How the Romans Observed the Stars: Astronomical Observation Session
An astronomical observation session with a telescope at the Roman Villa of Freiria, exploring the profound relationship between the Romans and the celestial bodies. The movements of the Sun and the Moon, as well as the planets and constellations that lent their names to many deities, played a fundamental role in guiding and shaping Roman life.
At a time when astronomy and astrology were closely intertwined, celestial cycles even influenced the organisation of economic activities, determining the agricultural calendar, particularly the timing of sowing and harvesting. By bringing together history and science, this session offers new perspectives on daily life 2,000 years ago at the most important Roman villa in what is now the municipality of Cascais.
