Description

As part of European Heritage Days, in which Cascais is participating with a wide-ranging programme of events at the municipalityโ€™s cultural venues, guided tours are being organised of the Cascais Tide Gauge, one of the oldest tide gauges in the world.

In continuous operation since 1882, the Cascais Tide Gauge was a pioneer in the observation of mean sea level and remains, to this day, the only one of its kind still in operation internationally.

Furthermore, it serves another important purpose: it is from here that the altitude of any location on the Portuguese mainland is measured. The data collected is of great importance to the entire scientific community, both nationally and internationally.
