"A Museum in (Re)construction", lecture by the Director of the National Museum of Archaeology, António Carvalho
The National Museum of Archaeology (MNA), founded in 1893 by José Leite de Vasconcelos, was installed in 1904 in the 19th-century wing of the Jerónimos Monastery, a National Monument inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list. According to its first director, in 'the most beautiful house he could aspire to'. More than a century later, and after the announcement that it would be covered by the PRR (Recovery and Resilience Plan), the Museum, which has become part of the identity of the monastic complex, is undergoing the most profound process of change in its history: the complete remodeling of the building and the complete reprogramming of its exhibitions.
Since it closed to the public in 2022, a methodical preparation has begun in which several preliminary studies and technical assessments were carried out, using companies of multiple specialties from North to South of the country. This occurred in parallel with the transfer of the Museum's services and the dismantling of the exhibitions, culminating in the summer of 2025 with two achievements: the beginning of the first phase of the contract for the complete renovation of the building and the cleaning, conservation and restoration of the facades. In this lecture, we revisit the stages of this unique and unrepeatable process.
