Animated Film Series
“A cinematographic technique based on photographing a series of still images of drawings or puppets, with the aim of creating the illusion of movement through the sequential display of these images”: From this canonical definition, one can intuit that animation - as the art of bringing life and movement to previously inert images - is the most purely fantastical film genre, where imagination and inventiveness emerge free from the shackles of mundane reality, transforming and transcending it. Walt Disney and his empire immediately and rightly come to mind, but the world of animated cinema encompasses (and has always encompassed, both before and after the advent of sound) the most diverse approaches. Segundo de Chomón can and should be placed in dialogue with Max Fleischer, just as the poetic experimentalism of Lotte Reiniger’s animated silhouettes is in no way inferior to the visionary existentialist grotesque cultivated by Jan Svankmajer. And let anyone who wishes to persist in a childish view of this genre be disabused, for within it there is room for countless “philosophical” and even “diary-like” reflections, as the great Vasco Granja - the “father of the Pink Panther,” who did not shy away from combining the classicism of Tex Avery with the modernity of the Eastern European animation school - taught an entire generation of children here, and as more unusual and recent works like *Flow* and *Persepolis* only serve to confirm. And we haven’t even mentioned such important studios as Japan’s Studio Ghibli (led by the master Hayao Miyazaki and his anime filled with leftist social consciousness), the British studio Aardman (keeping alive the noble tradition of stop-motion animation wrapped in a characteristically British sense of humor), or the American studio Pixar (taking computer animation to new heights through a highly distinctive and thematically complex narrative and visual style)…
