Launch of the exhibition catalog “The Invention of Estoril: History in Photography (1914-1955)”
The organization of the exhibition “The Invention of Estoril: History in Photography (1914-1955)”, at Casa Sommer, was based on the process of recovering more than two thousand gelatin glass negatives from the Hotel Palácio's collection, which had been undeveloped for almost a century.
The exhibition catalog provides a detailed reconstruction, through many unpublished photographs, of the meteoric process of building and affirming Estoril as Portugal's most iconic tourist destination, between 1914 and 1955. Surprisingly, the protagonists of these images rescued from time are not the buildings, but the people. The recordings of scenes from the daily lives of thousands of men, women and children, whose names we rarely know, humanize our shared history in a decisive way, allowing us to rediscover the world through their eyes and establish new bridges between the past and the present.
The presentation session of the exhibition catalog will be led by Cristina Carvalho and João Miguel Henriques, who will also give a very special guided tour.
