Description

The Cascais Cultural Center is presenting the new exhibition “Declinações Gandaresas e Outras”, dedicated to the work of Portuguese artist Ana Sério (Oeiras, 1976). In the canvases on display, sometimes figurative and sometimes abstract, Ana Sério presents us with her variations and elaborations on the concept of landscape, establishing a plastic and conceptual dialog with the writings of Carlos de Oliveira (1921-1981), mainly in the Portuguese artist's 1978 book “Finisterra”.

The narrative of “Finisterra” is constructed, fictionally, from loose writings found in a house in decline, located somewhere on the Gândara beach, where the writer lived in his youth. In Ana Sério's studio, memories, fictions and images, like those that inhabit the house in the book, materialize and the elements of the surrounding nature take shape.

Almost all the works are the result of the artist's imagination, but a small series of works is the result of direct observation of the landscape of the village of Maceira, which contrasts in every way with the horizon of dunes as far as the eye can see described by Carlos de Oliveira. The artist also imagined and built a model of the “Finisterre” house, which she then photographed to compose a sequence of images in cinematographic language.

In Ana Sério's canvases, as in the book, there is a constant sense of movement, as colors and shapes are transformed. In composing these drawings and paintings, the artist uses a variety of materials and supports, from oil paint to charcoal and beeswax on wood, linen and paper, demonstrating her mastery of technique, expressiveness and the beauty of the creative process.
The exhibition at the Cascais Cultural Centre recognizes the talent of an artist with a long and distinguished career, always based on innovation and creative strength.
