“NICHOLAS NIXON - Fundación MAPFRE Collections”, at the Cascais Cultural Center
Nicholas Nixon, one of the most important contemporary photographers, is exhibiting in Portugal for the first time.
Known for his moving black and white portraits, Nicholas Nixon (Detroit, USA, 1947) occupies a prominent place in the history of contemporary photography. The exhibition at the Cascais Cultural Centre, organized from the Fundación MAPFRE Collection, is the first major retrospective of the American photographer's work in Portugal and the largest ever held worldwide. It is also the first time that the extraordinary series “The Brown Sisters” has been exhibited in its entirety.
With more than 200 photographs taken between 1974 and 2022, the exhibition “NICHOLAS NIXON - Fundación MAPFRE Collections”, at the Cascais Cultural Center, is the largest retrospective of the award-winning American photographer's work to date. In the exhibition, curated by Carlos Gollonet, chief curator of the Fundación MAPFRE Collection, the photographs are presented chronologically, grouped into thematic nuclei - from the cold urban photographs at the start of his career to the portraits of the Brown sisters, undoubtedly one of the most poignant and touching reflections on the passage of time in the history of photography.
A master of a technique that has been perfected over the years, Nicholas Nixon photographs using large format cameras, which impose proximity and cooperation on the subjects. Up close, the photographer exploits the camera's descriptive potential to compose images that show the visible to reveal the intangible: love, passion, happiness, suffering, intimacy, the passage of time, loneliness. Without stereotypes, Nixon's images bring out the humanity and emotions contained in the expressions of those portrayed.
Nicholas Nixon is the author of the photographic series “The Brown Sisters”, one of the most important works in contemporary photography. Every year from 1975 to 2022, Nixon photographed the sisters Heather, Mimi, Bebe and Laurie. In the retrospective at the Cascais Cultural Center, all 48 portraits that make up the series will be on display.
The exhibition also features photographs that Nixon took of his own family, his wife Bebe and their children Sam and Clementine.
