ON STAGE | JEAN GENET’S “THE MAIDS,” BASED ON PAULA REGO’S WORK
The theatrical adaptation of Jean Genet’s “The Maids,” staged based on Paula Rego’s work of the same name, explores themes such as power, (in)submission, and female identity. Rego draws inspiration from Genet’s text to create strong, ambiguous characters: more agents of subversion (in Genet’s work, sometimes of themselves) and less as irredeemable victims. The production is the result of this creative collaboration that brings together a playwright, a painter, and actresses in a vibrant and original performance.
