Description

The climate changes we have been experiencing have clear impacts on the ocean. Due to ocean-atmosphere interaction, ocean waters have also been warming, which will affect marine life, particularly coral reefs, the distribution of marine species migrating to colder waters, the extinction of sensitive species, the reduction of fish stocks, and an increase in storms ravaging coastlines.ย

Warming causes what is known as ocean thermal expansion, which is responsible for about 70% of sea level rise, compounded by the melting of polar ice caps and glaciers. These injections of relatively warmer fresh water cause an imbalance in food chains and can drastically alter ocean current patterns.ย

By submerging coastal areas, rising sea levels cause habitat loss. We must not forget the role of humans, who pollute, particularly with plastics that create enormous islands that block the penetration of light, which is essential for photosynthesis by marine plants.

Warming, pollution, and the destruction of marine ecosystems are reducing the ocean's ability to function as the planet's lungs, which accelerates global warming.

Registration is required for this activity.
