Pocahontas
The Yellow Star Company, run by Carla Matadinho and Paulo Sousa Costa, presents โPocahontasโ, a musical for the whole family! On stage at the Carlos Avilez Auditorium, at the Estoril Academy of Arts, from 20 December 2026 to 3 January 2027.
SYNOPSIS
Once upon a timeโฆ there was a Native American girl called Pocahontas who belonged to the Powhatan tribe in Virginia, on the North American continent. Pocahontas was a very sweet girl, but also very independent and rebellious โ a real headache for her father, Chief Powhatan.
The indigenous tribe and the entire continent were going through troubled times due to the invasion of English settlers, who were seizing the Powhatanโs lands. One day, several settlers were captured by the indigenous people, and Great Chief Powhatan sentenced them to death. They were to be executed the following moon. At the very moment of the execution, Pocahontas interrupted the ceremony and implored her father not to commit such barbarity; in her view, violence would only breed more hatred and more violence. Chief Powhatan granted his daughterโs request.
Among the settlers sentenced to death was John Smith, who, after having his life spared, swore eternal friendship to the indigenous people and to Pocahontas. From this friendship would spring an intense love story, which would come up against racial prejudice between two peoples with differing motivations.
