Book launch: “Consciousness Does Not Die” by Mário Simões
The book “Consciousness Does Not Die”, written by Mário Simões, a retired professor of psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon, a clinician and researcher into Expanded States of Consciousness, explores the subject of consciousness and what our understanding of it can contribute to our comprehension of Near-Death Experiences and the phenomenology known as the ‘paranormal’.
For decades, science maintained that consciousness ended with the death of the brain or that it was a product of the brain. Today, this assertion is beginning to be re-evaluated. What does it mean, after all, to die? From a biological point of view, it is the moment when the body and brain cease to function irreversibly. But what if consciousness remains alive? This hypothesis has been gaining prominence in the light of the latest scientific research – data suggest that consciousness may not depend entirely on the functioning of the brain.
Without speculation or hasty conclusions, it shows us why certain experiences cannot be dismissed as mere hallucinations or errors of the brain.
If consciousness is not entirely reducible to the brain, then death may not be the end – but rather the beginning of a question capable of changing the way we live forever.
The author and the book will be introduced by Vítor Rodrigues, a clinical psychologist and psychotherapist, and lecturer in Transpersonal Therapies and Ethics at Sophia University, Palo Alto, California.
