Enquanto Canto e Conto: A Manta do José
The Museu do Mar Rei D. Carlos, Cascais’s sea museum, presents “Enquanto Canto e Conto: A Manta do José” (“José’s Blanket”). This theatre performance for children and families explores memory, family and saudade.
Saudade is a uniquely Portuguese word for a deep, tender longing for someone or something we love and miss. In this play, it is the thread that sets the whole story in motion, a tale woven with needles and yarn.
The story follows young José and his grandfather, a tailor. It all begins with a beautiful gift on the day José is born. What follows is a gentle story about growing up, the passing of time, affection, and the memories we carry with us.
The play is based on the book “A Manta do José” by Miguel Gouveia and Raquel Catalina, published by Bruaá. Its music draws on Jewish and Portuguese traditions, including Sephardic songs.
Suitable for ages 3 and over. Admission is free.
