European Heritage Days | Lecture “Canção Estoril” (Estoril Song), by Leopoldo Frederico de Drummond Ludovice
As part of European Heritage Days, the Portuguese Music Museum - Casa Verdades de Faria will host a lecture entitled Canção Estoril (Estoril Song) by Leopoldo Frederico de Drummond Ludovice, son of José Frederico Bravo de Drummond Ludovice (1919-2007), architect, modernist composer, and author of the famous song Estoril. He played from 1944 to 1946 at the Portuguese Radio Club, Emissora Nacional, and also at the Estoril Casino from 1949 to 1952.
Among José Frederico Bravo de Drummond Ludovice's compositions, the NATO Anthem (1951) stands out, and above all, the song Estoril, which was born unexpectedly after an improvisation at the Casino Estoril. Its immediate success paved the way for him on stage, and the inspiration of dawn at Tamariz gave rise to a melody that would become iconic.
Later adapted to bolero, the song gained popularity in nightclubs and was performed by Maria Odette and Beatriz de Sousa Santos, receiving critical acclaim and national exposure. In 1972, the piece was also used as the soundtrack for the documentary Costa do Sol.
Divided between architecture and music, Ludovice left a unique artistic legacy, where modernity, emotion, and cultural identity intertwine, thus contributing to the historiography of Estoril.
