Domingos Dias Martins - Photographer of the People and Stones of the Gerês Transmontano region
Domingos Dias Martins was born in Cela, Montalegre municipality, in the Gerês Transmontano region, on May 9, 1919.
During the 1940s and 1950s, taking advantage of his holidays, Domingos dedicated himself to systematically and tirelessly photographing, in black and white, his native Gerês: the landscape, the people, the work, and the customs. An admirable body of work that, like many others, risked falling into oblivion.
Beyond its photographic interest, recognized in some exhibitions and reviews, Domingos Dias Martins' photographs constitute a documentary collection of significant human, cultural, historical, and anthropological value, which deserves to be known and preserved.
