Half a loaf of bread, a book, and two cardboard wings: A virtual conversation
Come and talk with Helena Patrรญcio and Gaudรชncio Gaudรฉrio (present via Zoom) about the world of cartonera books, books produced with hand-painted and hand-sewn recycled cardboard covers by unconventional publishers, as an alternative and outside the commercial publishing circuit. This meeting takes place within the framework of the exhibition The Universe of Cartonera Books.
Specifically, the emergence of the cartonera movement in Latin America will be contextualized, and three examples of cartonera publishers will be presented: Vento Norte Cartonero (Brazil - Gaudรชncio Gaudรฉrio), EVA Cartonera (Portugal - Helena Patrรญcio), and Alma Cartonera (Portugal - Patrรญcia Andrade). There will also be time for viewing the documentary Carretera Cartonera, a guided tour of the exhibition The Universe of Cartonera Books, and the sharing and exchange of ideas.
Helena Patrรญcio (Coimbra, 1973) is a librarian in Lisbon and, in her spare time, a "gatherer" of words, phrases, and texts in books, films, music, magazines, and newspapers. She studied Law, Information Science, and Digital Libraries. She regularly collaborates with cultural organizations, promoting activities that invite the discovery of new ideas, experiences, sensations, and feelings through reading. She is a researcher in the field of developing bibliographic ontologies for the semantic web. She founded a SpokenMusic project that combines traditional Portuguese songs with poetry, short stories, legends, fables, and other tales.
In 2013, Gaudรชncio Gaudรฉrio created Maria Papelรฃo, the first cartonera publishing house in southern Brazil, in Rio Grande do Sul, which published six titles and conducted numerous workshops. In 2014, she founded the publishing house Vento Norte Cartonero, based on the same principles as Maria Papelรฃo: autonomy and self-management, which imply the absence of institutional ties. Currently, the project has a catalog of 34 titles and many cartonera workshops held in Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Spain, and Portugal. Since 2020, she has coordinated Multinacional Cartonera, an informal group of cartoneras from various Latin American countries that meets weekly via Zoom.
