Exhibition “King Pedro I and Inês de Castro – Love and Blood”
Cascais and the Teatro Experimental de Cascais pay tribute to King Pedro I, the monarch who granted Cascais its municipal charter in 1364.
On Municipal Day, 7 June, the exhibition “King Pedro I and Inês de Castro – Love and Blood” will open at the Espaço Memória – Teatro Experimental de Cascais. This initiative brings together local identity with the visual and performing arts.
Presented as part of the celebrations marking the theatre company’s 60th anniversary, the exhibition features historical photographs and highlights from the distinguished directing career of Carlos Avilez, who staged two plays dedicated to the tragic love story of Inês de Castro and Pedro I: Castro, by António Ferreira (1528–1569), and Inês de Portugal, by Jorge Guimarães. Visitors will also be able to view a scenic replica of the tomb of Inês de Castro, whose original is located at the Monastery of Alcobaça.
The exhibition also showcases the remarkable career of sculptor António Duarte, creator of the statue of King Pedro I located in Largo do Município. In addition, visitors can explore a selection of paintings inspired by the story of Pedro and Inês, created by various artists over the centuries.
Every Sunday at 5:00 pm, the documentary Inês de Portugal, based on the production staged at the Mirita Casimiro Municipal Theatre, will be screened.
The opening ceremony will include a tribute to Professor José d’Encarnação, who, for more than sixty years, has accompanied and promoted the work of Carlos Avilez and, consequently, that of the Teatro Experimental de Cascais.
