Cascais, 1870-1960: A History in Postcards
Long before social media, picture postcards were how the world saw Cascais. This exhibition traces almost a century of the town's history through illustrated postcards drawn from public and private collections, offering a vivid record of how its streets, coastline and society changed over time.
From the late 19th century onwards, postcards carried images of Cascais's beaches, streets, grand hotels and scenery to every corner of the globe, often with handwritten messages in many different languages. Filled with affectionate greetings and travellers' impressions, they became true ambassadors for the town, showing off the beauty of its bay and preserving the memory of a bygone era.
By pairing historic postcards with present-day photographs, the exhibition brings these images and words back to life, showing how Cascais has been experienced and shared by generation after generation. A fascinating journey through the town's past, where every postcard has a story waiting to be discovered.
