Description

In "Coco Chanel, Beyond Fashion", part of the career of the incomparable French fashion designer is told through her personal photographs, works of art - representative of the artistic avant-garde of 20th century Paris - and garments bearing the emblematic camellia, the flower symbolizing the brand founded by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel over a century ago and which, to this day, continues to influence the way fashion is thought of and how women dress.

Gabrielle Chanel (1883-1971) is an inescapable figure in the history of fashion: she dominated French haute couture for almost six decades and her creations were revolutionary for their time. Curator Maria Toral observes that "in addition to her brilliant work as a revolutionary of aesthetic trends, this is an aspect whose importance is indisputable and which relates her directly to the development of the 20th century avant-garde. She was not only a patron, but also a muse and, even more importantly, she became a key figure in the transformation of what had been formally established until then, transcending the boundaries of fashion."

Images by photographic luminaries such as André Kertesz, Man Ray and François Kollar - including some of Chanel's most iconic portraits and scenes from her legendary apartment at the Hotel Ritz in Paris - share the space of the Cascais Cultural Center with works by Salvador Dalí (who designed the bottle for Chanel No. 5 perfume), sculptures by Apel.les Fenosa, paintings by Tamara de Lempicka, Óscar Domínguez and Josep María Sert, lithographs and etchings by Pablo Picasso. The exhibition also includes a section on the fashion of the time, with references to names such as Elsa Schiaparelli and Madeleine Vionnet, also creators whose influence transcends the passage of time.
