Throughout the year, and every Monday (with a few notable exceptions), the D. Luís I Foundation presents a programme that revisits some of the major classic genres born with the Seventh Art and firmly established as distinctive ways of telling stories through images and sound.
Each genre is given its own month. June is dedicated to the Thriller.
Unlike detective fiction, the thriller (for which there is no exact equivalent in Portuguese) does not necessarily provide a complete rational explanation for the events it portrays. Instead, its defining feature is the atmosphere of suspense it creates and the way it draws viewers into the narrative, often through storytelling devices that venture into a territory of “unfairness” that classic detective fiction would never permit.
In thrillers, the protagonist is often thrust, unwillingly, into a situation of pursuit and danger. An enemy seeks to destroy them, employing increasingly sinister and macabre means to heighten the victim’s—and the audience’s—sense of anxiety and fear. The boundaries between thriller, detective fiction and horror are naturally fluid, much as they are in literature, where the genre emerged from both the psychological detective novel and the Gothic tradition.
It is worth noting that the most widely recognised cinematic reference for the genre is the work of Alfred Hitchcock, whose extraordinary ability to bring “bourgeois” anxieties and fears to the screen remains unparalleled: ordinary individuals caught in international conspiracies, races against time, suspicious characters, and nests of vipers hidden beneath the surface of seemingly respectable environments.
