“The Alchemy of Light”, by Rodney Smith, at the Cascais Cultural Center
The Cascais Cultural Center reaffirms its commitment to bringing the Portuguese public closer to the works of the world's greatest photographers with the opening of the unprecedented exhibition in Portugal “Rodney Smith - The Alchemy of Light”. Rodney Smith is acclaimed for his images that balance surrealism, style and intelligence, forged over a career spanning more than 45 years. The exhibition is an initiative of the D. Luís I Foundation and Cascais City Council, as part of the Bairro dos Museus program.
Evocative of René Magritte's surrealist painting, Rodney Smith's (1947 - 2016) photographs transport us to scenarios suspended between reality and fantasy. Far from the modern conventions of documentary photography or realism, Rodney Smith was able to create a unique language to reflect his vision of the world.
The exhibition “Rodney Smith - The Alchemy of Light”, at the Cascais Cultural Center from March 1, brings together more than a hundred works. Between portraits and landscapes, Smith offers meticulously constructed scenes, fantastic, curious, paradoxical and romantic stories and narratives that make the world seem clearer and sharper, finding order in chaos.
