SEBASTIÃO & ALICE: Exhibition of books censored and banned by the Estado Novo
OPENING: 12 April at 6pm
Closing the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April is this exhibition of banned books, a display of 46 works censored during the Estado Novo - all of them first editions. More than a collection, this exhibition is a gesture of resistance and a tribute to the authors whose words were silenced, but never suppressed.
Among the highlights will be a video testimony by Manuel Alegre, directed by Catarina Neves, in which the poet talks about two of his banned books: Praça da Canção (1965) and O Canto e as Armas (1967).
The aim of this exhibition is not only to revisit the censored titles, but above all to honour the authors and reinforce the importance of freedom of expression, which is increasingly under threat in these times. At a time when democracy is under subtle - or direct - attack, remembering the banned books is a reminder that speech is, and always will be, an act of freedom.
