Description

The history of Cascais and its inhabitants can be told and understood in a variety of ways, as evidenced by the unpublished study by Miguel Metelo de Seixas, which the Cascais City Council could not fail to support and publish. The book will be presented by Helena Gonçalves Pinto.

In “Heraldry in the town of Cascais”, the author takes us on an interesting tour of the town's history, told through the many heraldic emblems on the façades of private and public buildings, streets, monuments and many other decorative and functional elements. From pre-nineteenth century heraldry, to the heraldry of the Court that settled in Cascais from the end of the 19th century, to the institutionalization of heraldry in the 20th century, this study focuses not only on these visual codes that enunciate a certain social or institutional position, but also on their intrinsic connection with the buildings on which they are affixed and the town's urban development.

Miguel Metelo de Seixas, PhD in History, is a researcher at the Institute of Medieval Studies/Faculty of Social and Human Sciences/New University of Lisbon. His research focuses on the use of images as a form of self-representation and social and political communication, especially in the field of heraldry, which he analyzes from a diachronic perspective from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Age.  He was a professor at the Lusíada University of Lisbon, where he coordinated the Lusíada Center for Genealogical and Heraldry Studies and directed the Tabardo magazine; he is a visiting professor at several Brazilian, French and Italian universities. In the field of heraldry and history, he has published more than a hundred books in Portugal, Brazil, France, Spain, Germany, Great Britain, China and Italy, most recently: “Heraldry in Contact - Perspectives and Challenges of a Connective Image Form” (2023), ‘State-Rooms of Royal and Princely Palaces, 14th-16th centuries: Spaces, Images, Rituals’ (2022) and ‘Devises, lettres, chiffres et couleurs: un code emblématique, 1350-1550’ (2022). Between 2010 and 2021, he was president of the Portuguese Institute of Heraldry and director of the magazine Armas e Troféus.
