Lecture "Life on board and the port of Cascais without support for the India Route" by Marco Oliveira Borges
Cascais was, in the words of Damiรฃo de Gรณis, the place โwhere cargo ships, anchored in a wide and safe harbor, await the tide and monsoonโ.
For centuries, it was an unavoidable stop for all vessels entering or leaving Lisbon, playing a silent but decisive role in the great ocean routes. During the European Night of Museums, historian Marco Oliveira Borges โ author of Between Heaven and Hell: Life and Death on the Ships of Portuguese Expansion (1497-1655)ย โ visits the King D. Carlos Maritime Museum to talk about life aboard ship and the strategic importance of the port of Cascais in supporting the India Route. A journey through maritime history that illuminates the daily life, dangers, and logistics of the fleets that connected Portugal to the East.
