Description

Cascais was, in the words of Damiรฃo de Gรณis, the place โ€œwhere cargo ships, anchored in a wide and safe harbor, await the tide and monsoonโ€.

For centuries, it was an unavoidable stop for all vessels entering or leaving Lisbon, playing a silent but decisive role in the great ocean routes. During the European Night of Museums, historian Marco Oliveira Borges โ€” author of Between Heaven and Hell: Life and Death on the Ships of Portuguese Expansion (1497-1655)ย โ€” visits the King D. Carlos Maritime Museum to talk about life aboard ship and the strategic importance of the port of Cascais in supporting the India Route. A journey through maritime history that illuminates the daily life, dangers, and logistics of the fleets that connected Portugal to the East.
