Bullets and glitter | The B-Side of Eurovision
Bullets and glitter
The B-side of Eurovision
As you know, once again the world is at war. The sad thing is that the world has always been at war.ย
Among various stages ranging from sport to music, there is one that since 1956 has helped to decipher, change, avenge, forgive, sting, feed Europe - the Eurovision stage. In general, the average person sees Eurovision as a beautiful programme of musical entertainment, an embrace between peoples and cultures. That's what it is. But... it's so much more. The Eurovision stage has always been decisive in the history of Europe itself. It was and is a stage where weapons are cleaned and scores are settled. Or where the future is predicted. Eurovision itself before the fall of the Berlin Wall was one thing. After the fall of the wall, with the introduction of Eastern Europe to the contest, it became something else. No victory was for nothing. Behind every glitter, every sequin, there's always a bullet.
An Irish singer threatened with death by the IRA if she ran...the massacre at the Munich Olympics and Israel's victory the year after...Italy's victory with Insieme Unite Europe in the early 1990s...Eduardo Nascimento's 'O Vento Mudou' was a political move by Salazar to show Europe that he wasn't racist... Spain's victory in the 1960s was at the behest of Franco's regime... Eastern countries imprisoning civilians for voting for Western countries... countries interrupting the broadcast when the victory of another country with which they were in conflict was announced... there are so many, many stories that only illustrate the POLITICAL stage that Eurovision is and always will be. You only have to look, to put it simply, at the time of voting... who votes for whom. However, there were exceptions ... and clear ones. Where only the music, only the melody in its simplicity and beauty triumphed. Where nothing else mattered. Where Europe only let musical notes be heard. Salvador Sobral is a clear example of this.
The show has a moral message - the constant search for peace. And how unity between peoples should always be our stimulus.ย
And culture should ALWAYS unite people. Peace.
