County Heritage Routes: Heraldry in the town of Cascais
The heraldic marking of urban space is a form of symbolic appropriation by institutions, families and individuals who have shaped society over the centuries. In the case of Cascalense, there are few heraldic traces left from before the earthquake that hit the town so hard in 1755. The heraldry that can be seen today bears witness, above all, to the regeneration of this town in the second half of the 19th century, which from then on was projected as a privileged place of residence for Portuguese high society.
This tour, which will begin at Casa Palmela and end at the Cidadela Palace, aims to show how heraldry can be used as a source for the history of Cascais.
