Description

Two Portuguese visual artists, Carlos No and Manuel Botelho, come together to talk about their creative journeys. Their conversation is the starting point for a debate with young people on how art can interpret historical events, question conflict and champion democratic values. The opening question: how can art help us understand war, freedom and democracy?

Speaking in their own words, both artists will explore how art can act as a visual manifesto and a living witness to its time. Through their work, the session looks at different ways of portraying memory, war, migration, identity and hope, and at the role of art as a tool for critical thinking and active citizenship.

Designed for schools, this event marks the first term of the 2026/2027 school year and closes the 30th anniversary celebrations of the Fundaรงรฃo D. Luรญs I, the cultural foundation behind several of Cascais's museums. It is also part of Cascais, European Capital of Democracy 2026, a programme that encourages reflection on freedom, human rights and democratic participation as the foundations of a fairer, more inclusive society.

The talk takes place in the Maria de Jesus Barroso Auditorium at the Casa das Histรณrias Paula Rego, the museum dedicated to the Portuguese-born painter Paula Rego. It is aimed at students from Year 9 through to secondary and vocational education (roughly ages 14 to 18), particularly those studying History, Art History, Politics, Citizenship, Arts and Culture. A light snack is included.

Free of charge, with registration required by 20 November.
