Conference: Our Lady of the Conception of Abóboda: history, legends and traditions
On the walls of the former Casal Saloio there was a stone with the inscription “Casal de Malta”, topped by a Maltese Cross and with a date inscribed on it (1?68). In this lecture, to be given by Guilherme Cardoso, we will discuss a possible relationship between this former name for the Casal and Gonçalo de Azevedo, a knight of the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and Malta, who was buried with his family ancestors in the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição da Abóboda.
The history of this small chapel, built in the 16th century, and the cult and events associated with Our Lady of the Conception of Abóboda will also be the subject of this conference.
Guilherme Cardoso was born in 1952 in the parish of Alcabideche, in the municipality of Cascais. He has a doctorate from the University of Extremadura, Cáceres, Spain, since 2016, with the thesis “Archaeological Studies of the Roman Villa of Freiria”. He has been carrying out ethnographic, historical and archaeological research in the municipality of Cascais since 1972, resulting in four books, 40 articles and five exhibitions on the parish of S. Domingos de Rana. He is president of the Cascais Cultural Association, vice-president of the Olissiponense Studies Commission of the Association of Portuguese Archaeologists and president of the General Assembly of Espaço e Memória - Associação Cultural de Oeiras.
