THE ENCOBERT, by Natália Correia
O Encoberto tells the story of an actor, Bonami, who poses as King Sebastião. Although the narrative has the Sebastian myth as its central theme, Natália Correia did not confine the historical action to the dynastic crisis of 1580. On the contrary, the Philippine reign only functions as the symbolic landscape of the work, as it fades into the timelessness of the myth to make room for the development of an action about a people living in deprivation, unable to govern their own lives. Natália Correia's play is presented in three acts, with the space taking us to the metatheatre, where the verb tense brings the historical closer to the present. Fueled by irony, the text has a certain ambiguity, as it works with real time, which is the time of representation, and abstract time, which is purely imaginary; parts also appear in the form of poetry, further highlighting the ironic tone of the text. Fiction and historical facts mix and intersect as the action in the narrative develops. Natália Correia manages to bring together myth and reality, life and representation simultaneously.
